The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed March 4 that two of their workers were abducted. According to the ICRC, the kidnapping occurred between the northern cities of Gao and Kidal. The ICRC did not immediately release any further information regarding the incident or the identity of the victims. No group has claimed responsibility for the abductions.

Context

There is a high threat of kidnapping in Mali. The most common types of abduction in Mali include basic opportunistic kidnap-for-ransom and terrorist-related kidnapping. The threat is elevated in the north of the country where militant groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State maintain a significant presence. Armed criminals also operate in the region and may be responsible for the recent incident.
