Bangladesh: Protests demanding release of Prothom Alo media journalist possible in Dhaka into early April

Protests to demand release Prothom Alo journalist possible in Dhaka, Bangladesh, into at least early April. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Protests are possible in Dhaka into at least early April to demand the release of a Prothom Alo media journalist jailed on charges of violating Bangladesh's 2018 Digital Security Act. On March 31, student activists from Jahangirnagar University (JU) blocked the entrance to the Aricha-Dhaka Highway in Dhaka's Savar area; JU activists have threatened to stage additional demonstrations if their demands remain unmet by April 2.

Although no groups have as yet announced plans to do so, activists from other organizations could join the protests over the coming days. Typical rally sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, press clubs, and major thoroughfares. Demonstrators may block access to roadways connecting Dhaka to other urban centers. Participation will vary by locale, with the highest turnout likely to occur at student-related gatherings.

Authorities will likely increase security near such gatherings and may move to disperse any that become overly disruptive. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near the gathering site. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
