Bolivia: Protesters block access to airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra April 11
Protesters in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, block access to Viru Viru International Airport (VVI) April 11.
Event
Protesters demonstrating against several proposed laws that would restrict the freedom of speech and crack down on the country's large informal sector have blocked access to the Viru Viru International Airport (VVI) in Santa Cruz de la Sierra April 11.
The demonstrators will almost certainly cause significant ground transport disruptions. Flight disruptions are possible, especially if airport and airline personnel are prevented from traveling to VVI. Police are likely to deploy to protest locations. Clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators and reopen airport access roads.
Advice
Re-confirm flights before departing for VVI. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks, wait for police to dismantle them instead. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
